Winner Profile – Miss Jovita Palafox

The FAB for Life Foundation was proud to announce that this year’s award winner from Port Richmond High School is Miss Jovita Palafox.  Jovita started Port Richmond in September of 2008, as a first time ninth grader.  All those people who knew Jovita understand the great strides she has taken to put herself in a position to succeed.   Because of this hard work, Jovita will be graduating with over 50 credits and will be receiving a Regents Diploma.

Jovita has been constant in her dream of becoming a chef and owning her own business.  She has been a part of the Culinary learning section all four years. She has demonstrated her love for culinary arts by her grades in her culinary classes and her determination in her many hours of practice necessary to compete in the various culinary arts competitions. Jovita successfully competed in a competition for Monroe College called “America’s Best High School Chef “against numerous talented high school culinary students. She placed 5th in the competition and was awarded a $1,500 per semester scholarship.

Community Service is something that has been an integral part of her life as well. She started as a ninth grader helping at all of the wrestling matches and tournaments at school. She has also accompanied some of Port Richmond’s staff and students to the Cora Hoffman Center where they would interact with the clients there. She and her peers played games, danced and talked with the clients. Jovita also used her catering skills to volunteer at after school events by helping to serve food, and clean up.

Most recently Jovita can be found offering advice to some of the younger students when she sees them making poor choices. She tells them to make sure they have a goal, do all of their work, attend all of their classes and get the highest grades they can possibly get.  They listen intently and walk away and say she’s right. Jovita has grown into a mature, serious minded, soon to be college student.

Due to her perseverance, she has been accepted to Monroe College and will be attending this September.  Congratulations to Jovita on making an impact and we wish her continued success in the future!
